SALI Alliance™ Standards Advancement for the Legal IndustryModern Legal Industry Standards |
CHICAGO, IL — May 10 2024 — The Standards Advancement for the Legal Industry (SALI) Alliance today announced the kickoff of the public comment period for Version 1.0 of the SALI API Standard. This groundbreaking specification enables seamless data exchange between law firms, legal software vendors, and corporate legal departments using SALI's Legal Matter Specification Standard (LMSS) codes. The comment period will run through June 15, 2024.
The SALI API Version 1.0 represents the culmination of SALI's vision since its founding in 2017: to create a common legal data standard and a standardized protocol for transmitting that data. With Version 1.0 of the API standard, that promise becomes reality.
"The SALI API unlocks the power of SALI's 17,000+ unique tags for legal matters and documents, making data truly interoperable across organizations for the first time," said Toby Brown, President of SALI. "Whether for business of law metrics or substantive legal knowledge management, the SALI API will help the legal industry make better data-driven decisions."
Damien Riehl, a member of SALI Leadership, noted: "Technical representatives from major legal industry players — including Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, vLex, NetDocuments, iManage and Microsoft — collaborated to define requirements and build this game-changing API. That broad support means increased likelihood of quick, widespread adoption."
"Thomson Reuters is proud to have contributed our technical expertise to developing the SALI API Standard," said Imran Aziz, manager, Product Management at Thomson Reuters. "Thomson Reuters is committed to creating a developer-friendly API ecosystem that is based on industry standards promoting interoperability across the legal industry."
Jim Hannigan, another SALI Leader who helped guide the API standard, added: "We're grateful to the community of legal innovators who devoted their expertise to make the SALI API a reality. This standard will accelerate SALI's growth and its mission to bring consistency to legal data globally."
